Criterion B: DEVELOPING IDEAS ( LOGO)

LOGO DESIGN; CRITERION B

Criterion B: Developing Ideas

In this stage you will;
        i.  develop a list of success criteria for the solution (Design Specification)
ii.   present feasible design ideas, which can be correctly interpreted by others
    iii.   present the chosen design
iv.   Create a planning drawing/diagram which outlines the main details for making the chosen solution.

i. Developing a list of success criteria for the solution
What are the main features (specs) you want to see in your final product (Logo).
List 6 of them.
Examples:

Logo should have an introduction showing the problem situation.
Logo should have four company colors.
Logo should have a text showing.......

ii.  present feasible design ideas, which can be correctly interpreted by others
You will be required to design how you expect your logo to look like. This will include the introduction explaining the problem. Look at the examples below.
Areas to consider:

  • Draw/ sketch 4 designs.
  • Annotate/Text/ explain every content placed on the storyboard.
  • Leave a margin around the designs for easy scan or photocopy.
  • Use black ink / dark pencil that are clear and readable.
  • Show the direction of flow of ideas. use numbers, letters and arrows.
  • Capture all the design specs.

1.

2.

3.

   iii.. present the chosen design.

From the two designs (storyboards/templates) above; ( Write in paragraph form)
·         Which design will you chose for your final animation product?
·         Why did you choose that particular design? Justify
·         What improvements can you make to your chosen design?

iv. Create a planning drawing/diagram which outlines the main details for making the chosen solution.
In this step you will show the steps you will take to complete your task. Use the design specification you mentioned in the first objectives.

Example: Production Plan.

Worksheet 7: Design Brief

Design Brief

Design Brief is a short statement of what you are going to make, why you are going to make it, and for whom you are making it for.

It should be an open ended statement.

For example PD; a clock project.
A good Design Brief might be something like this...
"Teenagers have very busy lives. School, family and social activities mean that being punctual is very important.
I will design and make a wall clock that will be appealing for teenage girls. It will be a modern design and will be suitable for a teenage girl's bedroom. Because the design will appeal to teenage girls, them they will be more likely to look at it, read the time and therefore not be late.

A poor example would be something like this:
" I will make a football clock from plastic and print out pictures of players to use as the numbers."

Write your own design brief statement based on your research

Bibliography
List the website that you have used throughout the research period. (At least 6)

ii.        state and prioritize the main points of research needed to develop a solution to the problem
iii.      describe the main features of one existing product that inspires a solution to the problem
iv.      Present the main findings of relevant research.

Worksheet 6: Primary and secondary Research.

Research Activities: Logo and Trademark Design Unit
Planning your research process. It is important that you have a plan for your research.
What are some of the key areas you would like to do research on which relates to Logo Design?
General areas of Research
Prioritize your research areas
(Pick only 4 areas that you will focus your research)
·         What are Logos and trademarks?
·         What are histories of logos.
·         What are some of Logo design software used?
·         How are Logos created online?
·         What are the different types of Logo design software?
·         Where do organisations place their logos?
·         What are some of main features you would like to see in a Logo?
·         What skills do I need to have?
·         What are some of the techniques required for online Logo design?

What else can you add on this list

Research Activity 2
Use at least 4 types of free online Logo builders and give your feedback

Name Logo builder software
What does the software allows you to do; (main features)
What are the problems / Limitations of the software

Analyzing:  Of the software above which software’s main features have impressed you and how do plan to include those features in your product?

Worksheet 5: Problem Identification

Problem justification:
Come up with a problem statement focusing on the client’s need for organisation’s logo.

Write in details the problem above explaining well the situation.

Research
Before developing any solution, research is very important.
We have two types of research;
a)      Primary research; This is where we collect information first hand from source using interviews or questionnaires; https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/owlprint/559/

Conduct an interview with a business owner asking him how would he like his logo to be and what are the key aspect that he would like to see in his logo.

b)     Secondary research; This is where we collect information from books, internet, magazines etc.

This is the first stage in design.

You will be presented with a design situation, from which you identify a problem that needs to be solved. You will analyze the need for a solution and conduct an inquiry into the nature of the problem.
In order to reach the aims of design, students should be able to:
         i.            explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem for a specified client/target audience
ii.            identify and prioritize the primary and secondary research needed to develop a solution to the problem
iii.            analyze a range of existing products that inspire a solution to the problem
iv.            Develop a detailed design brief which summarizes the analysis of relevant research.

Our Problem
a)      Our problem relates to designing a company Logo or Trademark.
